Humane Farm Animal Care
If you’ve heard about the Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) but don’t really know what it is, you’re not alone. This is an international non-profit certification organization with a goal of improving the lives of farm animals of all kinds in food production, from birth all the way through slaughter. The program aims to drive consumer demand for more responsible farm animal practices all across the country. So, when you’re looking at cartons of eggs in the grocery store and notice the Certified Humane Raised and Handled label, you know you’re purchasing a trusted food product that comes from a facility meeting strict standards for farm animal treatment. Certified Humane products are currently available in Brazil, Canada, and Peru, in addition to the United States.
Humane Farm Animal Care – So what does this label tell consumers like you? Here are the main points:
- The producer has met standards set forth by the HFAC and applies those standards through all phases of life including slaughter.
- No cages, crates, or tie stalls are allowed. Animals must have the freedom to roam about and engage in natural behaviors.
- Animals must be given quality feed free from animal by-products, growth hormones or antibiotics.
- Must meet food safety and environmental regulations.
- Must comply with the American Meat Institute Standards (AMI).
Humane Farm Animal Care – Scientific Committee made up of 36 members…
These animal care standards are the result of a Scientific Committee made up of 36 members from the U.S., Canada, Europe and South America. They are animal scientists and veterinarians who are dedicated to upholding standards via annual independent inspections on farms, ranches and slaughter facilities.
The result of this label? You can feel good about the product you’re buying, knowing it has complied with all the standards set forth above. It doesn’t just apply to eggs but also to poultry, meat and other dairy products. Another goal of the Humane Farm Animal Care Act is to demand retailers, restaurants and other food service firms to make a change in the products they sell and to provide fair compensation.
